Georgia Bulldogs: Why Tray Matthews Will Have a Breakout Season

Tray Matthews and me at the recent Countdown to Kickoff Event

Tray Matthews?  All-SEC Freshman? Don't be too surprised.  Tray Matthews is a 6-0, 211 lbs. safety from Newnan High School in Newnan, GA.  He was rated at the #7 S by in the class of 2013.

Tray Matthews has certainly impressed coaches at UGA partly for his ability to deliver big hits.  He even knocked out WR Justin Scott-Wesley in a scrimmage in the spring.  Tray Matthews played safety with the 1st team defense in the G-Day Spring Game.  Matthews doesn't look like a freshman, similar to Todd Gurley in his freshman season.

Tray Matthews is explosive.  He is a strong tackler and a very physical player.  I compare him to a guy like Shawn Williams.  Matthews had 51 tackles, caused 2 fumbles, and blocked two kicks in his Senior season at Newnan.

Georgia has lost much talent and experiance in the secondary including FS Bacarri Rambo, SS Shawn Williams, CB Sanders Commings, and CB Branden Smith.  Georgia still has returning talent in CB Damian Swann, CB Devin Bowman, Connor Norman, and others.  The Bulldogs and defensive coordinator Todd Grantham have certainly done a great job on the recruiting trail signing 8 defensive backs including 4-stars Shaq Wiggins, Brendan Langley, Reggie Wilkerson, and of course Matthews.

Look for Tray Matthews to start in Week 1 at Clemson and put up a lot of numbers in 2013.  Matthews looks to be the next great defensive back in the SEC.
