Top 5 Players That Have Something To Prove Coming Into Spring Ball

1.  S/LB Josh Harvey-Clemons     6-5, 207 lbs.    So.        Lowndes High School, Valdosta, GA

JHC played some Safety last season in the Bulldog Defense.  Georgia Defensive Coordinator Todd Grantham said that Harvey Clemons has a good shot at playing Linebacker.  He was the #2 OLB coming out of high school in the class of 2012.  He is a little skinny for a LB.  Coach Grantham needs to find out where Josh Harvey-Clemons will play in 2013 and spring practices are a good place to start.   But he is an explosive playmaker wherever he starts.

2.  DE Ray Drew    6-4, 285 lbs.         Jr.                   Thomasville High School, Thomasville, GA

He was a 5-star DE coming out of high school.  He was a critical part of the "Dream Team" of the class of 2011.  He  has fallen out of the spotlight as the transition from the high school level to UGA has not been smooth for him.  He still is a very talented football player with experiance which UGA's defense lacks.  He is very unproven, and he needs to have a great spring to gain the coaches' confidence.

3.  DL John Taylor        6-4, 335 lbs.     So.                Jenkins County HS, Millen, GA

He was the #9 DT in the country coming out of Jenkins County High School.  He has never played a college football game.  He was redshirted in 2012 and will look to compete for the starting job at Noseguard in 2013 and try to fill the huge void left by the leaving of Kwame Geathers and John Jenkins to the NFL Draft.  He has great size, which is critical in Todd Grantham's 3-4 Defense to have this kind of player at Nose.  He needs to keep getting stronger and impressing the coaches to get the job.

4.  SS Tray Matthews    6-0, 194 lbs.   Fr.                 Newnon HS, Newnon, GA

Tray Matthews Played Alongside former Bulldog Alec Ogletree at Newnon High.  He is also a very talented DB who was rated as a 4-star recruit and the #9 DB in the country.   He needs to make the transition to the college level swiftly as UGA has some gaping holes in the secondary with the departures of FS Bacarri Rambo and SS Shawn Williams to the NFL Draft.  Look for Matthews to hopefully soon be a force in the secondary.

5.  DL John Atkins         6-4, 303 lbs.      Fr.            Hargrave Military Academy, Hargrave, VA

Georgia needs depth in the Noseguard position desperately, and John Atkins can certainly fill that role.    The 6-4, 303 lbs. Defensive Lineman actually graduated in the class of 2012 but was accademically ineligible to attend UGA.  He attended Hargrave Military Academy to get stronger along with LB Leonard Floyd who was also acedemically ineligible.  Someone needs to emerge at the Noseguard position, and Atkins is just the one to do it.
